Carbisdale Castle sutherland Scotland

Carbisdale Castle is a historic castle located in the Highland region of Scotland. It is situated near the village of Culrain, close to the Kyle of Sutherland. The castle was built in 1906-1917 for the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland, Mary Caroline Blair. Designed in a Scottish baronial style, Carbisdale Castle stands as an impressive and picturesque structure. The castle's ownership has seen several transitions over the years. Initially, it was built as a residence for the Dowager Duchess, who was the widow of the 3rd Duke of Sutherland. Following her death in 1912, the castle was passed down to her son, the 4th Duke of Sutherland, who owned the property until 1933. In 1933, the castle was purchased by Sir Alexander Matheson, a wealthy industrialist and descendant of the original Matheson family who had owned the estate before it was acquired by the Sutherlands. Sir Alexander Matheson used the castle as a residence and also made some alterations and additions to the building. During World War II, Carbisdale Castle served as a temporary hostel for the Norwegian Government in exile. The castle's location was chosen due to its seclusion and proximity to the railway station at Culrain. The Norwegian Royal Family and other prominent figures stayed there during this time. After the war, the Matheson family sold Carbisdale Castle to the Scottish Youth Hostels Association (SYHA) in 1945. The SYHA converted the castle into a youth hostel, making it one of the most unique and picturesque hostels in Scotland. It continued to serve as a hostel for several decades, providing affordable accommodation for travelers exploring the Scottish Highlands. In recent years, there have been further changes in ownership. In 2011, the SYHA decided to sell Carbisdale Castle, and it was purchased by an international businessman. However, the castle was put back on the market in 2017, and its ownership was transferred to a new owner, barrister Samantha Kane.
