The Kaufhaus Görlitz
Description
The Kaufhaus Görlitz, also known as the Görlitzer Warenhaus, was used as a filming location for multiple movies and TV shows, including The Grand Budapest Hotel and House of Promises:
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The interior of the hotel was filmed in the abandoned department store, which was used to build out both versions of the hotel. The building's iconic glass ceiling and chandeliers, as well as its sweeping staircases, are featured in the film.
House of Promises
The department store was transformed into the Jonass department store for this series. A "marble" floor was created using adhesive foil to fit the series' late 1920s setting.
The Kaufhaus Görlitz was a thriving department store when it opened in 1913, but closed in 2012 as the town's population declined. The building has a unique interior design, including cantilevered staircases, ornate chandeliers, and a glass dome. After the filming of The Grand Budapest Hotel, the building reopened as a department store and has become a popular tourist attraction.
